Watch a representative of the organisation "UN Watch" rightly attacking the UN Human Rights Council for being what it is: a mere platform of hypocrites, despots, rapists, criminals, gay murderers, mass murderers, and above all, of deadly enemies of Israel. He's being aggressively reprimanded by the chairman of the Council who, on other occasions, could not thank tyrants and violators of human rights enough for justifying their own criminal misbehavior. European birthday: thank you, America

Europe celebrates its 50th birthday. Bureaucrats and nostalgics all over the 27 member states congratulate each another for this apparent achievement of peace, welfare and stability. However, they seems to ignore to whom they really owe this: To the United States. The real peace-makers have always been sitting in Washington, not in Brussels, Paris or Berlin. It is only because of the American security garanties during the cold war that the European exeperminent could be carried out in what can be considered a statist biotope. It is only thank to this that the Europeans could afford to spend their funds for social "welfare" and other redistributive systems without caring about traditional political necessities. That is also the reason why this project is going to fail: Since the days of the six founders, Europe has become way too big and uncontrollable. Furthermore, the US are not wiling any more to stick out there necks for the Europeans now that the Cold war is over and that the European have proven useless military allies (Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq). The Europeans have forgotten that their club has been created only to preserve a balance of power ensuring "peace". It could never become a genuine political project of unification. The actual European climate hysteria has to be seen as nothing more than a desperate attempt to stay active in a "good" field of politics - while the US (and the UK) are still caring for the dirty work all around the globe. The Europeans are trying to preserve some sort of pure European perspective made out of mere symbolics - and they are inevitably going to fail. Welcome back to reality, Europe. Dienstwaffe bleibt zu hause: Gut so!

Ein weiterer Versuch der Etatisten, das Gewaltmonopol des Staates zu zementieren, ist gescheitert. Armeeangehörige sollen auch künftig ihre Waffen zu Hause aufbewahren. Eine Mehrheit im Nationalrat hat es bei der Beratung des Waffengesetzes abgelehnt, einem SP-Antrag zuzustimmen, der verlangte, dass Armeewaffen nicht mehr zur persönlichen Ausrüstung gehören sollten. Ob denn der Liberalismus über das Waffenrecht definiert werden könne, fragte jüngst Markus Gilli den Chefredaktor und Eigentümer der "Weltwoche", Roger Köppel, in der Sonntagabendssendung "SonnTalk": Natürlich kann der Liberalismus über das Waffenrecht definiert werden. Im Waffenrecht findet der klassische Liberalismus gar seinen elementarsten Ausdruck, da hier das Verhältnis des Bürgers zum Staat weitgehend festgelegt wird. Der freie Waffenbesitz soll nicht nur zum Ausdruck bringen, dass der Staat dem Bürger "vertraut". Diese etwas seichte Begründung wird ja politisch stets gern vorgeschoben, da sie eine Wohlfühl-Kuschelromantik vorgauckelt, deren Symbolik aber auch im Verhältnis zum Staat nicht sehr viel taugt. Es geht hierbei jedoch um ganz anderes: Der Staat soll den Bürger vielmehr grundsätzlich fürchten. Nur so kann des Bürgers individuelle Freiheit intakt bleiben. Denn Freiheit ist stets Freiheit von staatlichem Zwang. Deshalb ist staatliche Macht auch mit allen tauglichen Mitteln einzudämmen. Und dazu gehört eben auch die Fähigkeit zur Gewaltanwendung als ultima ratio, die das Volk gegenüber den Behörden und deren Beamten behalten muss, will es souverän bleiben. Hitler wusste, weshalb er den Juden den privaten Waffenbesitz verbot. Dann lässts sich's leichter morden. Erstaunlicherweise soll jedoch durch ein restriktives Waffenrecht das Wohl der Bürger gesteigert werden, ihre Sicherheit soll verbessert werden und es soll auf zauberhafte Weise weniger Verletzte und Tote geben. Diese Wunschvorstellungen entspringen jedoch verstaubten Planungsfantasmen: Wenn die Linken heute fragwürdigerweise behaupten, das Massaker im Zuger Parlamentsgebäude im September 2001 hätte bei restriktiverer Gesetzgebung allenfalls verhindert werden können, so ist dem folgendes zu entgegnen: Nicht nur hätte ein solches Gesetz kaum den Mordwillen eines Psychopathen beeinflusst (der Amokläufer von Zug hätte vorher ja kaum um behördliche Erlaubnis gefragt, zudem besass er wahrscheinlich auch keinen Waffentragschein, als er zum Parlamentsgebäude schritt; er war also durchaus gewillt, schon das Gesetz zu übertreten bevor er seine Tat ausführte). Vielmehr hätte ein im Gegenteil völlig liberalisiertes Waffenrecht viel eher dazu führen können, dass eines der Opfer damals eine eigene Waffe dabei gehabt hätte und somit in der Lage gewesen wäre, sich selber zu wehren. Damit wäre das Unglück wohl kaum ganz abgewendet worden. Doch hätten unter Umständen Menschen gerettet und die Zahl der Toten gesenkt werden können. Das Gesetz hatte den späteren Opfern diese Möglichkeit jedoch von vornherein weg genommen. Das hat das Unheil nur verschlimmert und keineswegs gemindert. Sicherheit lässt sich eben nicht gesetzlich verordnen.

TVA, MWST, VAT: No thanks

Il n'y a que les imbéciles qui ne changent jamais d'avis. Il n'y a pas si longtemps, que je plaidai encore dans mon programme libéral pour un déplacement de la charge fiscale vers les impôts sur la consommation. En verité, un impôt comme la TVA reste en fin de compte un impôt sur le revenu qui pénalise l'épargne. En plus, la TVA est, par nature, beaucoup plus compliquée que les impôts directs et permet à l'Etat de pénétrer tous les domaines de l'économie privée: Chaque entreprise devient exécuteur du fisc - à ses propres frais - et toute transaction devient sujette à déclaration. Selon les premiers résultats, les Suisses refusent la caisse unique avec plus de 70% de non. La caisse de maladie collective dont l'idée émanait des fin-fonds du pire anachronisme étatiste a été rejettée par les Suisses avec une majorité fracassante. Une défaite de plus pour la gauche sur le terrain des finances publiques.

Switzerland - European Union: dispute on taxation

Switzerland is under pressure from the European Union because Swiss corporate taxation is less predatory than the European one - this fact is considered to constitute "harmful" tax competition. Swiss taxation is even said to "distort" cross-border competition. The European Commission's whiny decision can be found here, and here's the corresponding press release. Yet, as so often: He who complains about competition being "unfair" is usually merely trying to hide his own incapability to prevail honestly on the given market, be it a tax market. Europe resembles more a People's Republic than a democratic market economy. The rich, the bright and the succesful have been quitting the sinking ship for some time now. The Lisbon goals seem further away than ever. No wonder the bureaucrats in Brussels do not like the ones who seem to be spoiling their little protectionist party. The European Commission alleges that Swiss companies are relieved from operating (sic!) costs through direct taxation, which would give them an "unfair" advantage on the European market... Funny argument when you think of the paramount sums granted as subsidies within the European Union to all sorts of sectors: Out of the 120 billion Euros of the EU's 2006 budget at least 83 billions were spent on subsidies (you know the things called "Cohesion", "Welfare", "Natural ressources" etc.). But as these subsidies are spread all over the place and as they are not should not be granted specifically to certain enterprises, they are not "harmful" or "distortive"... Moreover, European companies are for example granted a much better and more efficient access to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) than their Swiss competitors are. And yet, nobody is claiming that the ECJ is somehow "distorting" competition... Switzerland has two things to do now: Get back the initiative by considerably lowering or even abolishing corporate taxation in general - at least the direct federal profit tax (which exists besides cantonal taxation and amounts to a 8.5% rate). If the European Union does not like Swiss taxation, then why not make it even worse (i.e. more competitive)? The second thing to do is to increase the efforts in order to reach Free trade agreements with Japan and the United States. This would of course not be a substitute for the important and good economic ties which Switzerland has with Europe. But you shouldn't create a Cluster risk either.

Aus der heutigen "NZZ am Sonntag", S. 17: Defizite im Vorschulalter sind nicht gerecht verteilt, das haben verschiedene Untersuchungen der letzten Jahre auch in der Schweiz gezeigt. Ob Karies, beschränkter Wortschatz, Fettleibigkeit, fehlende Neugier oder die Unfähigkeit, einen Purzelbaum zu machen - die Schwächen von Kindern kumulieren sich stets ungefähr im selben Fünftel der Geselschaft. Aha! Diese Defizite sind wohl - wie etwa Reichtum ! - von einer noch unvollkommenen Macht schlecht verteilt und müssen nun gerechter auf alle "umverteilt" werden. Die Eltern sind ohnehin unfähig. Lasset deshalb den Staat eingreifen*, mit seinen Heerscharen an Beamten, die's dann schon richten werden: Wir brauchen endlich eine gelenkte Gesellschaft. * Natürlich unter dem nichtssagenden Stichwort "Chancengleichheit"...
