Israeli-Syrian peace talks?

In a dramatic announcement, the Prime Minister's Office said that Israel and Syria had begun indirect peace talks. This is certainly dramatic news. Though many rumors spread in the last months on this issue, it is actually quite unexpected to get an official confirmation now on contacts between the two countries. It is especially remarkable when remembering that Israel obviously carried out a successful airstrike against Syrian nuclear facilities last September. This might show that Israel really considered the threat at the time to be very serious since this attack could have very well compromised any such sensitive talks. Anyway, it may of course be naive to place any hope in such negotiations. But the very fact that they take place is remarkable and not at all comparable to the regular pro-forma meetings with the Palestinians. Compared to the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah clique, the Palestinians are a mere junior ennemy. Syria's stakes are however quite high and, considering its alliances and commitments, it will be very difficult to find a way to deal with Damascus. In any case, the price the parties would come to pay will be an expensive one. Also, it would be quite ironic that these political steps should take place under such a weak and disappointing politician as Ehud Olmert. However, it seems that such talks have started back in 2004, i.e. while Ariel Sharon was in office. After his defeating of Palestinian terrorism and his withdrawal from Gaza, this would definitely make Ariel Sharon Israel's first hero in the 21st century.

Israel's ambassador before the UN

As Palestinian terrorism is back at its murderous best, it is worth to study the speech which Israel's ambassador delivered today at the UN: Statement by Ambassador Itzhak Levanon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations, Geneva 7th Regular Session - Human Rights Council Response to Resolution A/HRC/7/1 6 March 2008 Mr. President, I cannot compete with the exaggerations, distortions and inaccuracies I haveheard here today. I must admit that I don't have such a fertile imagination, and am unable to point a rhetorical picture which doesn't reflect reality. What, yes, I can do is to tell you and the council the truth, the simple truth. The truth is, that the Hamas terrorists took over the Gaza Strip by force, and established an irredentist entity. That, they have smuggled lethal weapons into this territory with the sole purpose to kill Israelis. That, since the beginning of this year, in only two months, they have fired 671 missiles at civilians, women and children. That, they received these missiles from countries in the Middle East, such as the Iranian-made 122mm Grad missile. That, Hamas is committing war crimes and collectively punishing a population of a quarter of a million citizens living in Ashkelon, Sderot, the Negev and Netivot. That, they call for the physical destruction of my country and translate these words with deeds. That, they brought Al-Qaeda to the Gaza Strip, a fact confirmed by the President of the Palestinian Authority. Mahmoud Abbas, in the London El Hayat newspaper on 27 February 2008. The truth is that 50% of the population of Sderot suffers from anxiety and stress. That, more than half of the juvenile population endures sleeping disorders. That, the children of southern Israel are screaming "I want to live." That, Israel has left no stone unturned in our attempts to alert the international community that the situation is untenable. That, we have knocked on the door of every embassy and every chancellery. And the world remained silent. The truth is, that in the 12 resolutions regarding the Palestinian-Israeli situation that have been passed by this Council, not one has made even passing mention of the relentless aggression against Israel. Not only of them has called explicitly to halt the deluge of Kassam rockets and Grad missiles. Not one of them attempted to recognize that Palestinians do not have a monopoly on suffering; not one of them acknowledged that the children of Israel have the same right to safety as Palestinian children. Not one of them attempted to empathize with the cries of an Israeli mother protecting her children, or the fear and trauma experienced while running to a bomb shelter, know that only 30 seconds separates you from death. Mr. President, Israel will not be intimated by critical words of one-sided resolutions. We have the fundamental right to live and the essential right to self-defense. It is our obligation to protect our citizens and we will do so. The passage of yet another resolution will not waive the problem, and will not bring stability to the region. The solution, Mr. President, is deceptively simple: Hamas aggression must stop immediately. The firing of missiles must terminate completely. When the Palestinian permanent observer takes the floor, I wonder on behalf of whom is he acting? Is it on behalf of his President Abbas, who seeks peace and stability with Israel? Or does he defend the Hamas terrorists who spread suffering and desolation? Mr. President, Another routine resolution does not show temerity. A country making patronizing statements at the High Level Segment does not demonstrate strong moral fiber. A true show of courage would be displayed if the members of this Council would look with objective eyes, would think in a non-selective way, and would decide impartially. Yet, because of the self-serving members of the OIC and Arab Group who hold a majority can block any courageous steps, that is unlikely to happen here. For those who constantly ask why we do not engage with the Council more often, it is precisely because of circumstances such as this. Sie kündigte an, die Gewalt gegen Israel fortzusetzen. Geschätzte 150'000 Personen nahmen an der Demonstration auf dem Katiba-Platz teil. Sie trugen Hamas-Spruchbänder und schwenkten grüne Fahnen. «Wir werden Israel nicht anerkennen», stand auf einem grossen schwarzen Banner, das von einem Gebäude hing. Der vom palästinensischen Präsidenten Mahmud Abbas entlassene Ministerpräsident Ismail Haniya bezeichnete «Widerstand und Jihad» als «einzige Mittel zur Befreiung Palästinas». Jaaa, gebt ihnen ihren eigenen Staat...* * Einen palästinensischen Staat gibt es eigentlich auch bereits: Jordanien ist der arabische Nachfolgestaat des ehemaligen Mandatsgebietes, welches bis in die 1920er Jahre vom Mittelmeer bis zum heutigen Irak (!) hin reichte. Der Teil östlich des Jordans wurde dann zum arabischen ("palästinensischen") Jordanien. Der jordanische König hat es später in den 1990er Jahren geschickt verstanden, seinen Staat aus dem Konflikt und damit aus der Verantwortung hinauszumanövrieren.

Projüdische iranische TV-Serie?

Das ist schon ein starkes Stück nihilo-pavlovscher Desinformationskampagne. Wer hat unterdessen nicht auch schon davon gehört? Associated Press (AP) berichtet, das iranische Staatsfernsehen leiste plötzlich einen Beitrag zur Verständigung zwischen Iranern und Juden. EIne TV-Serie thematisiert den Holocaust und fördere damit das Mitgefühl der Iraner mit den jüdischen Opfern der Nazis. Von einer "iranischen Version von 'Schindlers Liste' " und von Tabubruch ist die Rede. Die Juden scheinen plötzlich als Menschen dargestellt zu werden, deren Schicksal selbst junge Iraner zu Tränen rührt. Der iranische Staat wolle - immer gemäss AP - damit wohl sein Image aufpolieren; schliesslich sei er nur gegen den israelischen Staat und nicht gegen die Juden - wie so viele "gemässigte" Mitteleuropäer ja auch, versteht sich. Gemäss NZZ: Im streng kontrollierten iranischen Fernsehen tut sich Erstaunliches: Die Judenvernichtung wird in einer Spielhandlung thematisiert. In mehreren Episoden eines Dramas geht es um Schicksale von Juden im Paris des Jahres 1940. Zahlreiche durch des Naziregime Verfolgte wurden damals dank iranischen Pässen gerettet. Die Serie bricht mit zahlreichen Tabus und scheint vielen die Augen geöffnet zu haben. (...) «Wo bringen die sie hin?» fragt der iranische Held der Serie voller Schrecken, als er die ersten Deportationen beobachtet. Die Szenen wecken Mitgefühl mit dem Schicksal der Juden. (...) Beachtlich ist, dass die Sendung das Plazet des iranischen Klerus haben muss, denn das staatliche Fernsehen steht unter der Oberaufsicht des geistlichen Führers, Ayatollah Khamenei. Die Serie könnte ein Zeichen dafür sein, dass der Iran sein antisemitisches Image revidieren will. Es soll offenbar die Unterscheidung betont werden, die iranische Offizielle häufig machen: Man habe nichts gegen Juden, nur gegen den Staat Israel im Nahen Osten.(...) Die unschöne Wahrheit ist natürlich nicht jene, welche AP uns da verklickern will. Der Spiegel berichtete eben gerade kürzlich davon. In Tat und Wahrheit geht es hierbei um ein Einschleusen von subtilen antisemitischen Verschwörungstheorien. Die Juden sind nicht nur selbst schuld am Hass der Welt gegen sie, nein, sie haben die Vernichtung der anständigen Antizionisten unter ihnen sogar selbst orchestriert. Eigenartig, dass die sonst doch recht angesehene Auslandredaktion der NZZ (und offensichtlich das Wall Street Journal) diesem Humbug aufgesessen sind: Dazu der Spiegel: [Man muss] allerdings wissen, dass sich hinter der exotischen Fassade des Quotenhits eine unter Holocaust-Leugnern weitverbreitete These verbirgt. Danach hätten jüdische Zionisten mit Adolf Hitler kollaboriert, um ihren Wunsch nach der Gründung eines jüdischen Staats zu verwirklichen. Dabei hätten sie sogar viele Gleichgesinnte kaltblütig ermordet, vor allem diejenigen, die sich gegen die politischen Ambitionen der zionistischen Bewegung gestellt hätten. Und tatsächlich: Dieser Aspekt wird in "Breite: Null Grad" immer wieder hervorgehoben - viel stärker als die Judenvernichtung durch die Nazis. (...) Ein iranischer Rabbiner, der der Emigration der Juden nach Palästina kritisch gegenübersteht, wird getötet - von Zionisten. Auch der Onkel der jüdischen Studentin Sara erlebt das gleiche Schicksal. Der plumpe Plot: Der pensionierte Geschichtsprofessor ist in Besitz von Dokumenten, die die geheimen Verbindungen zwischen dem jüdischen Weltverband und den Nationalsozialisten dokumentieren.(...) Die jüdische Weltverschwörung - ein altes Gericht an iranischer Sauce wiederaufgewärmt. Und als subtile Desinformation dank AP mundgerecht und subtil in Ihren Stuben aufgetischt. UPDATE I (18.09.2007, 20:52): Und zur Erinnerung daran, wie tief verwurzelt der Antismenitismus in der islamischen Welt ist, hier ein kleiner Exkurs in die 40er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland, als der Grossmufti von Jerusalem seinen Verbündeten, Adolf Hitler, in Berlin besuchen ging. Der Grossmufti (ein Verwandter Arafats) hat danach mit Erfolg die Mein Kampf-Ideologie in die arabische Welt exportiert, wo sie seither zum festen Bestandteil der Ideologie namentlich der Ayatollahs, des Hezbollah und der Hamas wurde (Thanks Daled Amos!).

Quand en Suisse des gens expriment leurs idées et qu'ils traitent une terroriste militante du Hezbollah de terroriste, ils risquent de se faire épingler par la police de la pensée: Le vocable de «terroriste» n'est pas anodin. On ne peut pas utiliser ce terme «choc» n'importe où, n'importe comment, hors d'un contexte particulier. C'est en substance ce qu'expliquent les juges de la Chambre d'accusation dans une ordonnance qu'ils viennent de rendre. Décision qui va faire du bruit puisqu'elle renvoie sa copie au procureur général pour l'inculpation de plusieurs personnes d'extrême droite, dont l'avocat et député Yves Nidegger, le conseiller national genevois Jacques Pagan, le conseiller national valaisan Oskar Freysinger, tous UDC, le journaliste polémiste Alain Jean-Mairet. Inculpations pour calomnie, ce qui n'est pas rien. Ces messieurs avaient qualifié Soha Bechara, une Libanaise domiciliée depuis quelques années à Genève, de «terroriste». Cela apparaissait dans la plainte adressée à l'organe de surveillance contre une émission de la Télévision suisse romande. Celle-ci avait mis en scène l'ancienne sympathisante du Hezbollah dans un Temps présent, diffusé à l'automne, consacré à la situation au Sud- Liban après les bombardements israéliens de l'an dernier. (...) Cette dernière [Soha Bechara -ed.] a été emprisonnée sans procès pendant dix ans pour avoir tenté d'assassiner en 1988 le général Antoine Lahad, alors chef d'une milice créée au Sud-Liban par l'Etat d'Israël. Des faits qu'elle ne conteste pas, même si elle n'a ­jamais été ni jugée ni condamnée. Elle a agi, affirme-t-elle, en tant que militante sympathisante du Hezbollah, mais conteste avoir été une «terroriste». (...) Les médias font alors bien leur part des choses en traitant alors ces gens courageux d'ennemis du système de "personnes d'extrême droite". Notons par ailleurs que la plainte n'était pas dirigée contre une chaîne de télévision honnête, mais bien contre la télévision étatique (Télévision Soviétique du Régime, TSR), c'est-à-dire contre celle qui s'alimente des cotisations extorquées des citoyens contre leur gré et qui en profite pour faire de la désinformation à l'écart des mechanismes du marché. En tous les cas, encore heureux que la terroriste militante en question ait cette fois choisi de privilégier la plume par rapport à la dynamite pour faire valoir son point de vue. Holocaust-seminar in Switzerland?

Switzerland is one of the few European countries to prohibit the denial of the Holocaust. This blog, although being clearly pro-Israel, has always been of the opinion that such repressive law violates the freedom of expression, favours a politically correct understanding of history and is thus of genuinely totalitarian nature. Under such circumstances, it appears quite difficult to understand how the socialist minister of foreign affairs, Micheline Calmy-Rey, can suggest to Iranian officials to hold a conference on "different perceptions of the Holocaust" in Switzerland. If I were to suggest such thing, there would dimmediatley be some leftist moralists available to sue me in the name of political correctness. However, Micheline Calmy-Rey (whom some call Calamity-Rey), whose one-sided statements against Israel and whose pro-terrorist sympathies are notorious, can suggest to Iranian revisionists to do what is precisely punishable to normal citizens. I can only say that I am ashamed to have such a person being paid with my tax money.

Nihilo-pavlovisme appliqué

Il fallait bien s'attendre à ce que la propagande anti-israélienne batterait son plein ces jours. Voici un bel exemple de désinformation et de révisionisme comme on n'en voit pas tous les jours, paru dans Le Temps le 4 juin 2007 (accès payant). Quarante ans d'ivresse Luis Lema L'ivresse du vainqueur, la volupté causée par une victoire trop facile? Si l'on commémore, ces jours, les 40 ans de la guerre des Six-Jours, c'est parce qu'aucun autre événement international n'a été tout à la fois si court dans le temps et si dévastateur dans ses effets. Certes, il y eut à l'époque ce sentiment de miracle, au demeurant largement partagé par une grande partie du monde. Le tout jeune Etat d'Israël, empreint encore du gouffre de la Shoah, qui réussissait en une semaine à terrasser les armées hostiles et à tripler les territoires sous son contrôle. Certes, il y avait ce «non» arabe, catégorique, sans nuances: non à Israël, non à la discussion, non à la paix. Mais quel que soit le poids de l'histoire, quelles que soient les fautes de l'ennemi, quelles que soient encore les justifications, réelles ou aberrantes, qui ont été formulées entre-temps, les faits sont là aujourd'hui: quarante ans plus tard, Israël reste plongé dans cette entreprise hallucinante qui a consisté à nier l'existence d'un peuple, à le priver de sa terre, et à se penser définitivement au-dessus des lois. L'euphorie de la victoire a vite laissé la place aux calculs politiques et à la prééminence du sionisme religieux. La chutzpahpolitique (un mot hébreu qui signifie l'impertinence ou l'impudence) alliée aux justifications divines: un mélange qui s'est révélé incontrôlable. En partant à l'assaut des collines palestiniennes, en transformant de fond en comble Jérusalem pour rendre le processus irréversible, les Israéliens se sont laissé prendre au piège du vainqueur que plus rien n'arrête: à leur propre piège. La construction du mur en Cisjordanie, les barbelés à Gaza, les centaines de milliers d'Israéliens illégalement installés sur les terres palestiniennes: cette logique s'est mise en place quelques jours à peine après la guerre, lorsque le premier colon israélien débarquait sur le Golan syrien, en juillet 1967. Ce jour, le conflit israélo-arabe changeait de nature. Depuis lors, une quasi-guerre a commencé à Gaza. Un camp palestinien s'est embrasé au Liban. Depuis lors, l'extrémisme est monté partout dans les ruelles défoncées où s'entassent les perdants de 1967, venus s'ajouter à ceux de 1948, date de la création de l'Etat d'Israël. L'extrémisme serait apparu de toute façon? Tout autre aurait fait pareil à la place des Israéliens? Peut-être. A force de décision, Israël a réussi un exercice fou de transformation de la réalité. Mais, ce faisant, il a aussi abandonné à dessein ce qui pouvait faire sa force: l'autorité morale. Le Nihilo-pavlovisme dans toute sa beauté et schizophrénie déconnectée: Mis à part les nombreux travers historiques (p.ex., le problème libanais ne date aucunement de 1967, le Liban n'ayant pas étée affecté par cette guerre, mais bien des années 70 alors quel roi jordanien - arabe - avait mené des opérations sanglantes contre les Palestiniens qui intiguaient contre lui. C'est alors qu'Arafat et sa bande sont aller semer le désordre au Liban), cet article se veut être une apologie de la politique arabe de destruction contre Israël depuis 1948. Il y aussi la schizophrénie habituelle: À la vieille époque, Israël c'était bien (je ne suis donc pas antisémite, voyons, en plus je sais ce que veut dire "chutzpahpolitique" en hébreux; je m'y connais donc particulièrement bien et je suis appelé à m'exprimer). Après 1967, Israël est cependant devenu le valet de l'impérialisme néo-libéral américain dont Ariel Sharon a été la pire expression. C'est un État fachiste qui tue des civils innocents et qui devrait être radié de la carte devrait acceuillir tous ces Palestiniens pacifiques. Si Israël baissait enfin les armes, on aurait la paix dans cette région infectée par la politique du Gross-Israël likudien. *** Toutefois: Étant notoirement beau et intelligent, ce blog rend hommage à cette politique du combat de survie inconditionnel, aux hommes politiques qui l'ont menée et aux soldats qui l'ont défendue. Finie l'abstention israëlienne?

Olmert a beau être nul et faible, il y a une limite à tout. Le cessez-le-feu unilatéral est fini ? En tout cas, à l’issue des consultations de sécurité tenues dans son bureau de Jérusalem, Olmert a décidé de mettre officiellement un terme au cessez-le-feu unilatéral. (...) Il a donc été décidé d’ordonner à Tsahal de réaliser une série d’opérations, dont le but est de frapper les cellules responsables des tirs de roquettes et leurs chefs. Il faut dire qu'après les derniers mois de boucheries inter-palestiniennes et de chaos total, il doit y avoir des gens à Gaza qui doivent véritablement souhaiter le retour de l'occupation et des patrons israéliens. Avouons tout de même qu'Olmert et Peretz sont sous pression politique énorme (à juste titre), et qu'ils doivent par conséquent trouver un intérêt personnel d'"agir". Par ailleurs, une incursion de Tsahal à Gaza ne peut qu'unir les gangs palestiniens. Toutefois, une telle opération s'insèrerait dans une logique historique de combat de survie de l'État d'Israël que ce blog ne saurait négliger ni manquer d'approuver. Saudi official: 'Israel should leave 'Arab' territory'

What territory? Ah, that one. Israel should withdraw from Arab territory and allow the creation of a Palestinian state before Arabs recognize it, a Saudi official said Monday - the first Saudi statement on the issue since Prime Minister Ehud Olmert publicly invited Arab leaders to discuss their ideas for peace with him (JPost). Its appears once again that a Palestinian state is not for this decade. As Gorbatchev once noted: Those who come too late are punished by life. It seems that the Palestinians are two generations too late (for more about these "occupied" territoires, click here).

Watch a representative of the organisation "UN Watch" rightly attacking the UN Human Rights Council for being what it is: a mere platform of hypocrites, despots, rapists, criminals, gay murderers, mass murderers, and above all, of deadly enemies of Israel. He's being aggressively reprimanded by the chairman of the Council who, on other occasions, could not thank tyrants and violators of human rights enough for justifying their own criminal misbehavior. Via Israellycool: A UN report expected to come out soon states that close to 50% of palestinians suffer from malnutrition. That's probably because the other 50% have used the aid to buy ammunition. But sure, it is all only because of the "occupation". If they were finally entitled to have a State of their own, everything would be better.

Tsahal : les tentatives d’attentats suicides en nette augmentation Claire Dana Picard lundi 8 janvier 2007 - 09:33 D’après les résultats d’une enquête réalisée par Tsahal, les forces de sécurité ont interpellé au cours de l’année 2006, en Samarie [le nord de la Cis-Jordanie -ed.], pas moins de 187 terroristes palestiniens résolus à perpétrer des attentats suicides. Malheureusement, l’armée n’a pas toujours réussi à les déjouer et l’an dernier, deux attaques de ce type ont causé la mort de 11 citoyens israéliens. Un officier supérieur du commandement de la zone militaire centre a indiqué dimanche qu’en raison de la baisse relative du nombre des victimes d’attentats suicides, les Palestiniens cherchaient à présent à multiplier leurs menaces et à recruter de nouveaux ‘’candidats’’. L’officier a souligné que les terroristes jouissaient désormais d’une liberté d’action quasi totale depuis que Tsahal s’abstenait de pénétrer à l’intérieur de leurs villes et pouvaient donc agir comme bon leur semblait. Les forces de sécurité ont déjoué dimanche plusieurs attentats suicides en interpellant à Shehem quatre terroristes du Fatah. Lors de l’arrestation, les soldats ont découvert deux ceintures explosives prêtes à être utilisées, pesant chacune cinq kilos. Tsahal a indiqué que si le nombre des attentats suicides avait diminué, c’était grâce aux opérations menées par ses forces qui avaient porté sérieusement atteinte au réseau du Djihad islamique du Nord de la Samarie. En 2005, 23 Israéliens avaient été assassinés dans des attentats perpétrés par l’organisation terroriste. En deux ans, 33 terroristes ont été éliminés ou arrêtés. Cela fait un attentat évité tous les deux jours. Et cela ne compte que les tentatives déjouées. Il faut par ailleurs tenir compte du fait que d'autres mesures israéliennes (barrière de sécurité, arrestations et liquidations ciblées) ont également contribué à éviter un certain nombre d'attentats d'être même tentés. Il faut vraiment qu'Israël commence enfin à faire des concessions à ces gens.

Palestinians mourn their friend Saddam

They have always been close friends. Now the Palestinians mourn one of their most generous donors. These people should really receive a peaceful, viable state of their own. JENIN, West Bank (AFP) - Carrying a symbolic coffin for Saddam Hussein, more than 1,000 Palestinians have demonstrated in Jenin in the northern West Bank, in response to the ex-Iraqi president's execution. Demonstrators carried pictures of Saddam and chanted slogans against Iran, the United States and Israel in a rally instigated by moderate Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas's Fatah party on Sunday. Some 200 Palestinians demonstrated in protest at Saddam's execution on Saturday in the West Bank town of Bethlehem. The former Iraqi dictator was one of the most popular Arab leaders among Palestinians, due in part to his payments of millions of dollars to the families of suicide bombers and anti-Israel fighters, as well as his missile attacks on Israel during the 1991 Gulf War. Of course, it was Ariel Sharon who defeated the second Intifada and Palestinian terrorism. But it is also clear that Saddam's elimination by the Americans has helped a lot, too. The operation Iraqi Freedom especially cut this precious source of funds. For instance, groups like Islamic Jihad have always been grateful receivers of Iraqi money paid in order sponsor terrorsim against Israel. Eliminating both the funds and the leaders (through targeted killings) has proven the most efficient way to overcome terrorism.

I am currently reading a Biography on Ariel Sharon which is not bad but not excellent either. It has more of a narration about what happend than of an analysis of why it happend. However, Arik Sharon has accompanied the State of Israel's history since its very beginning and he will have left a sustainable mark on the region's overall political condition. Although he will have been a man of contradictions and sometimes of cruelty, I believe he will rightly be seen as one of the greatest military and political leaders Israel has seen so far. On that occasion, I would like to indicate a site with (unfortunately) short radio recordings made at the beginning of the Yom Kippur-war in 1973 when the Egyptian forces invaded the eastern part of the canal of Suez, until then held by Tsahal since 1967. The Israeli army was completely run over but it was Sharon's tank division which later managed to cross the canal to the west and to nearly crush the entire Egyptian third army, thus leading the path to another (yet difficult) Israeli military victory. However, on the day of the Egyptian invasion, Sharon's troops were under heavy fire. At a particular moment General Sharon took the radio microphone and started to speak with one of the soldiers in the bunkers on the canal. The man saw the Egyptian troops approaching and anxiously called for reinforcements. Sharon was probably reminded of his own painful experience as a young man during the war of Independence when he was himself wounded and nearly killed by Arab fighters. Max Maman, the young soldier on that day of October in 1973 who desperately called for help and fire support was also afraid to die. General Sharon is heard as he speaks to this man while explosions and gunfire occur in the back. Max Maman later died in battle. english / Histoire / Mideast
