Albert Hofmann dies

Albert Hofmann, creator of LSD, has died last night in his hometown, near Basel, Switzerland at the age of 102. Even if you are not a drug user (I am not), his book, LSD: My Problem Child, is very much worth reading. Hat tip: Lorenzo.

Swiss Censorship on eBay?

You would think that you'd get to see such sites in communist China only. Yet, if you want to have a closer look at certain things on the internet which do not please the government, you experience state censorship made in Switzerland (note that I did not want to watch or buy any porn or terror items or the like but just take a look at a 60 year old Bayonet). Die Konzessionierung als planwirtschaftliche Umverteilung

Roger Schawinski will Tele Züri zurückhaben Im Frühsommer vergibt das Bundesamt für Kommunikation die neuen Konzessionen für Radio- und Fernsehsender. Tamedia steht unter Druck, denn der Zürcher Regierungsrat hat sich nicht für Tele Züri und Radio 24 ausgesprochen. (...) Nach Ansicht von Roger Schawinski braucht Tele Züri gar keine Konzession. «Ohne Konzession liesse sich das Sendegebiet ausweiten. Das würde ich auch tun», sagt Schawinski. Das vom Bundesamt für Kommunikation zusammengeschusterte Konzessionsgebiet Zürich-Nordwestschweiz erstreckt sich von Zürich bis Arbon, reicht im Süden aber nicht einmal bis Rapperswil am Zürichsee. Ohne Konzession erhielte Tele Züri kein Gebührengeld in der Höhe von 1,5 Millionen Franken pro Jahr, es hätte keine Garantie für einen Platz im Kabelnetz – es wäre aber auch nicht an absonderliche Grenzziehungen im Verteilgebiet gebunden und müsste keine Regionalfenster in Schaffhausen und im Thurgau ausstrahlen. (...) Dieses Beispiel unterstreicht, was im Bereich der öffentlichen Medien ordnungspolitisch das einzig richtige wäre: Aufhebung der Konbzessionierung, Liquidierung der infamen Gesellschaft Billag AG und Entlassung der "öffentlichen" Sender in den freien und ehrlichen Wettbewerb. Gegenwärtig haben wir es mit einer perfiden planwirtschaftlichen Umverteilungsmaschinerie zu tun, die sogar "private" Medien mittels Subventionierung vom öffentlichen Tropf abhängig macht und so den Markt im Keime erstickt. Irgendwelche kulturbeauftragte Bürokraten entscheiden dann, was mittels Steuergeldern subventioniert bzw. vom Markt verdrängt werden soll. Das wäre doch mal ein fürwahr liberales Anliegen für die FDP, oder? Besser jedenfalls, als unsinnige Fuisonspläne mit den hellroten Grünliberalen zu wälzen...

FDP für nationalen Zusammenhalt oder: Noch ein bisschen mehr Pelli-Etatsimus

Pelli will die FDP auf drei Schwerpunkte einschwören Die FDP Schweiz soll sich in den nächsten Jahren auf die drei Kernthemen Arbeitsplätze, nationaler Zusammenhalt und schlanker, bürgerfreundlicher Staat konzentrieren. «Wir hoffen, damit spürbarer zu werden,» sagt Parteipräsident Fulvio Pelli. Aha, also wieder mal ein schwachsinniges Programm der FDP Schweiz. Nach dem "Hop Sviz"-Flopp wollen die Pelli-Etatisten nun also den "nationalen Zusammenhalt" fördern. Das tönt schon fast wie wenn man für eine "gerechtere Schweiz" oder andere linke Fantasmen eintreten wollte. Schaut man etwa nach Frankreich, dann weiss man, dass der Spruch der "Cohésion nationale" den Archetypen der langue de bois darstellt, jener verfloskelten Beamtensprache, der ein Chirac zu rhetorischen Höhenflügen verholfen hat und welche sich vorzüglich eignet, um jede weitere Aufblähung der Bürokratie und eine Zunahme sozialistischer Umverteilung zu rechtfertigen. Es scheint, wir sehen also neuen Politvorstösssen entgegen, welche der Wahrung des "nationalen Zusammenhaltes" dienen sollen: Noch mehr Gesetze über den Minderheitenschutz, über die Sprachenförderung, über den sozialen Frieden, über die Entwicklungshilfe für Randgebiete und die Subventionierung von veralteten Strukturen etc. Solche Vorschläge sind zwar allesamt gut gemeint, doch kosten sie bekanntlich viel und nützen dafür wenig. Und die FDP wird da eifrig mitmischen und sich dann wundern, wenn sie bei den nächsten Wahlen verdientermassen wieder auf den Grind kriegt. Den Wir-Liberalen merkt man die Verzweiflung bei ihrer Gratwanderung zwischen "staatstragender" Partei und Feigenblatt-Liberalismus an. Wäre die Partei jedoch wirklich liberal, so gäbe es nur ein einziges Motto: Mehr Freiheit, weniger Staat. Das Motto könnte man dann auch konsequent bewirtschaften. Und dann müsste man nur noch danach leben.

This is a must-read for people who do not believe in statist mystisicm nor in gratuitious altruism. But beware: it can very well get you addicted and - despite its more than 1000 pages - could also be used as a tool for conversion to capitlism, the unknown ideal.

La "dignité" des plantes??

Je croyais d'abord que c'était une mauvaise farce (via freilich.ch). La dignité de la créature dans le règne végétal La question du respect des plantes au nom de leur valeur morale Communiqué de presse du 14 avril 2008 La dignité de la créature vaut-elle aussi pour les plantes ? La Constitution fédérale et la loi sur le génie génétique l’affirme et exige qu’on la prenne en considération. La Commission fédérale d’éthique pour la biotechnologie dans le domaine non humain (CENH) soutient, elle aussi, la conception suivant laquelle on ne saurait traiter les plantes de façon arbitraire. Une nuisance infligée aux plantes sans raison valable n’est moralement pas admissible. (...) L’idée selon laquelle les plantes ont une "dignité" se heurte chez certains à la désapprobation ou au rejet. D’aucuns considèrent déjà la simple question d’une justification pour l’utilisation des plantes comme insensée: avec les plantes on se situe sur un terrain moralement neutre. Mais il y a aussi des voix qui excluent les végétaux du cercle des êtres vivants moralement dignes de respect, parce que la vie humaine deviendrait alors trop compliquée. Ou bien les obligations envers les plantes pourraient relativiser les devoirs – prépondérants sur le plan moral – que nous avons envers les hommes et les animaux. La CENH est chargée d’élaborer des propositions pour la concrétisation du principe de la dignité de la créature et a publié un rapport sur cette question. Le rapport discute la question de savoir quel sont les positions éthiques qui tiennent compte des plantes au nom de leur valeur morale ainsi que la question de leur signification pour une utilisation des plantes justifiée sur le plan éthique. Que les végétaux doivent être protégés pour eux-mêmes impliquent qu’ils ont une valeur morale et des intérêts propres. Les membres de la commission concluent à l’unanimité qu’une atteinte arbitraire infligée aux plantes n’est moralement pas admissible. Par ailleurs, la majorité est d’avis qu’une instrumentalisation totale des plantes requiert une justification. Je n'aurais pas osé penser que nos fonctionnaires (payés par nos impôts) tomberaient aussi bas que cela. À quand l'avocat d'office pour les marguerites (ça existe déjà pour les animaux!). Est-ce que les plantes auront bientôt un droit à être représentées dans les parlements? À quand la première plainte pour abus végétal? Pourquoi de telles propositions sont-elles dommageables? Elle relativisent avant tout dramatiquement les droit fondamentaux ("naturels") de l'homme dont découlent tous les autres droits. Y rapprocher des droits fictifs des vers de terres, des coléoptères et des rhododendrons, signifie finalement mettre à pied d'égalité ces derniers avec l'homme. Et pourtant, comme l'a démontré John Locke dans ses Treatises of Government, les droits de propriété ne viennent pas "comme ça", de par la bonne volonté d'un fonctionnaire. Ils sont liés à la faculté de l'homme d'en faire usage. En revanche, la proposition absurde de créer des droits des plantes et des animaux montre bien que les apparatchiks de l'éthique officielle ignorent tout des fondements des droits dits "de l'homme". Comme l'expliquait pourtant si bien Murray N. Rothbard dans son Ethics of Liberty: [T]he assertion of human rights is not properly a simple emotive one; individuals possess rights not because we “feel” that they should, but because of a rational inquiry into the nature of man and the universe. In short, man has rights because they are natural rights. They are grounded in the nature of man: the individual man’s capacity for conscious choice, the necessity for him to use his mind and energy to adopt goals and values, to find out about the world, to pursue his ends in order to survive and prosper, his capacity and need to communicate and interact with other human beings and to participate in the division of labor. In short, man is a rational and social animal. No other animals or beings possess this ability to reason, to make conscious choices, to transform their environment in order to prosper, or to collaborate consciously in society and the division of labor.(...) There is, in fact, rough justice in the common quip that “we will recognize the rights of animals whenever they petition for them.” The fact that animals can obviously not petition for their “rights” is part of their nature, and part of the reason why they are clearly not equivalent to, and do not possess the rights of, human beings. Happy Birthday, Thomas Jefferson!
